The leafy Georgetown University campus overlooks the Potomac River. Founded in 1789, Georgetown is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the country. Its rigorous undergraduate and graduate programs attract scholars from across the U.S. and around the globe—famous alumni include former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia, and actor Bradley Cooper. Its athletic teams, especially its men’s basketball team, are also highly successful. The origins of Georgetown’s cryptic cheer, “Hoya Saxa!” are not fully understood.
