- Fort Stevens: the only battle to take place in DC, where Lincoln was fired upon.
- Manassas: Home to the first major battle of the war, and a second battle, which took place the following year.
- Antietam: Bloodiest battle of the war
- Monocacy: Known as the “Battle that Saved Washington”
- Gettysburg: Regarded as the turning point of the war
- Fredericksburg: Site of a major Confederate victory in Dec. 1862 with heavy Union losses
- Appomattox: Site of Lee’s surrender to Grant on April 9, 1865
- DC’s Forts: Built to defend the capital, largely earthen in construction
- Navy Yard: A key part of DC’s defense. The famous ironclad Monitor was repaired at the yard after her historic battle with CSS Virginia. The Lincoln assassination conspirators were brought to the yard following their capture. The body of John Wilkes Booth was examined and identified on the monitor Saugus, moored at the yard.
- Harpers Ferry: Site of John Brown’s slave rebellion in 1859.
