HOT PICKS FOR LATE-NIGHT BITES

A late-night movie, concert or nightclub visit often calls for a bite to eat afterwards, and discerning foodies won't have to look farther than these eateries offering delectable menu items until as late as 4 am:

Proof: This wine-centric restaurant in bustling Penn Quarter is now offering a late-night menu (Thurs-Sat, 11pm-2am) that features items like crispy shrimp tempura, foie gras scrambled eggs served on truffle-buttered brioche and drunken grilled cheese with white wine and garlic. All items are under $13.

Cashion's Eat Place: From midnight to 2am, look for the "After-dark" menu at the award-winning Cashion's Eat Place in Adams Morgan. Feast on selections like wild-mushroom risotto, Thai curry with chicken, pork carnitas and Serrano ham with dates.

Ben's Chili Bowl: The DC staple where Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Bill Cosby hung out is open until 4am on Friday and Saturday, and until 2am all other days of the week. A night is not complete without a stop at this U Street staple. Make sure to order the half-smoke smothered in Ben's famous chili.

Hudson: This new West End restaurant serves up dishes like matzoh ball soup, brick oven pizza, a ham and smoked Gouda omelet and cheesesteak sliders until 2am Monday through Thursday, until 2:30am on Friday and Saturday and until midnight on Sunday.

Julia's Empanadas: If you're looking for something to "pick-up-and-go" with, Julia's Empanadas might be the perfect spot. With locations in the center of some of the city's nightlife hubs (Dupont Circle, U Street and Adams Morgan to name a few), Julia's is a popular stop on the way home from a late-night bar crawl, especially since its open until 4am on Friday and Saturday. There are always hot empanadas on-hand, with fillings like chorizo with rice and spinach with ricotta. Vegan selections are offered on a rotating basis.

Bistro Francais: If the late-night hours call for a bit of culture, another place to try is Georgetown's Bistro Francais. Open Sun.-Thurs. until 3am and Fri.-Sat. until 4am, the bistro serves late-night favorites include quiche Lorraine, eggs Benedict and duck breast with apple honey sauce.
