WASHINGTON, DC-One of Washington, DC's most anticipated annual
events, the Eleventh Annual TASTE OF DC: A Salute to our City
promises an exciting lineup of fun, free activities for children
of all ages. From live performances by young musicians to arts
and crafts projects, the food and music festival will delight
the region's youngest residents and visitors Columbus Day weekend,
October 12-14, 2002.
The KidzQuest Pavilion, located on Freedom Plaza, will feature
hands-on fun and educational activities, from creative projects
and performances to sports and fitness challenges. Among the highlights
for families:
- Talented young local dancers, singers, and instrumentalists
will perform on the Youth Talent Showcase Stage. Scheduled performers
include the Fillmore Jazz Band, Barnet William's World of Drumming,
Halua O'Aulani Hawaiian Dancers, Maple School Irish Step Dancers,
and Frederick Douglass Oratory Contest Winners.
- Young artists can make special creations in the Art Pavilion,
with programming led by VSA Arts, an international nonprofit
organization dedicated to promoting the creative power in people
with disabilities. The Fillmore Arts Center will also be on
hand to demonstrate pottery techniques.
- In the Family Dance Pavilion, families can learn traditional
steps or practice the latest dance crazes. Scheduled workshops
include: African dance with the Kono Youth Ensemble; Hawaiian
dance with the Haula O Aulani Dancers; Irish Step with the Maple
School Dancers; Hip Hop with World Art Focus; Hand Dancing with
the National Hand Dancing Society; and a Limbo party.
- The KidzQuest Fitness Pavilion will feature activities to
help build strong, healthy bodies. Among the workshops are demonstrations
in tae kwon do, basketball, and soccer. Athletic kids can test
their skills at Kid Trek, a kid-size obstacle course inspired
by Washington, DC Landmarks.
- Budding scientists can stop at the Science Pavilion, where
the American Geological Institute celebrates Earth Science Week.
Special activities will focus on one of Earth's most important
natural resources: "Water is All Around You."
- After a day of learning, tasting and exploring, children
can kick back and relax at the Just For Fun Pavilion. Featured
"Just For Fun" activities will include demonstrations
and workshops on magic, balloon twisting, yo-yo, and more.
Beyond the KidzQuest Pavilion, the Eleventh Annual TASTE OF DC
fills historic Pennsylvania Avenue with other family friendly
features. This year's event includes a visit from Dodge City,
presented by Dodge, where car-loving kids can become part of a
NASCAR Pit Crew or ride in a Winston Cup simulator. Families can
partake in kid-size samplings from over forty restaurants while
enjoying free live entertainment. Two new general seating areas
will enable families with small children to dine in comfort and
ease.
Celebrating the unique sights, sounds, and flavors of the nation's
capital, the eleventh annual TASTE OF DC: A Salute to Our City
will take place Columbus Day weekend, October 12-14, 2002, on
