While summer tempts travelers with fantastic vacation values, fall’s line up of cultural events and happenings gives travelers plenty of reasons to return to the nation’s capital. DC’s museums and galleries put on some of their most compelling exhibitions and performances in the fall. Each September, The Kennedy Center kicks off the city’s cultural calendar with its annual Prelude Festival, a month-long preview of the new season.
September also marks the beginning of a new season in DC. Congress and the Supreme Court find themselves back in session again after a summer hiatus. Students in the city’s prestigious universities return to the classroom, joined by visiting interns from other colleges throughout the world.
Fall visitors can also take part in popular annual events like the fall edition of WalkingTown DC, a weekend of free walking tours, and neighborhood festivals such as Adams Morgan Day and Taste of Georgetown. On Veterans Day, DC’s world-famous monuments and memorials hold wreath-laying ceremonies to honor the men and women who’ve served in conflicts, attracting thousands of veterans and their families.
DC’s beautiful mid-Atlantic location and acres of parkland make it a great urban destination for fall foliage viewing. Explore Rock Creek Park, Theodore Roosevelt Island or the National Arboretum on foot or on bicycle when the vivid fall colors reach their peak.
