Penn Commons is a chic American Tavern on 6th and H Streets.
Chef Jeff Tunks, with a national reputation for his unfussy, but praiseworthy dishes, is heavily focused on market-based, seasonal ingredients featuring modern interpretations of time-honored American classics. There will be some crossover appeal with popular tavern specialties Tunks so cleverly created at sister restaurant District Commons, adding a little wit and sass: people will watch the clock for nightly dinner bell plates like Nana Sue's Meatloaf with a Sweet Onion Mushroom Gravy, Scalloped Potatoes and Bacon Braised Green Beans; and the burger menu will feature specials that are just what the whirlwind, fast paced crowd desires before hitting a Capitals game... these grilled and finished-off-on-the-flat-top burgers are not ordinary by any means, but gutsy themed choices that welcome a healthy appetite.
Penn Commons will become a quick favorite with its 40 beers and wines on tap, hoping to claim most beers from each ale-producing U.S. state, all American wine list, and 13 signature cocktails.
All in all it is simply classic American tavern food at its best with a Tunks' twist. With the advent of great U.S. products and the resurgence of the local farmer, Tunks has cultivated partnerships with specific purveyors nearby... or just made it himself.
