Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle

Established in 1840, St. Matthew's is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington. It has been cited as having one of the most beautiful church interiors of modern times. President John F. Kennedy's funeral mass was celebrated here on Nov. 25, 1963. Pope John Paul II said Mass here on Oct. 6, 1979 during his first visit to the U.S.
