or (202) 789-7058. Travel & Tourism in DC: General Facts and Figures (2007) - DC welcomed 16.2 million visitors (a 7% increase from 2006), including 15.0 million domestic visitors and 1.2 million international visitors.
- DC was the 8th-most visited U.S. destination for international travelers in 2007.
- 61% of 2007 overnight-domestic visitors traveled to DC for leisure.
- For overnight visitors, the average length of stay is 3.4 nights.
- Sixteen states supply 76% of all overnight-visitors to the District: Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Texas, Colorado, Washington and California.
- The top metropolitan areas of origin for all 2007 domestic visitors include: New York City, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Boston, Raleigh-Durham, Los Angeles, Norfolk (VA) and Chicago.
- Top countries of origin for 2007 international visitors (in order) include: UK, Canada, Latin America (Brazil, Argentina, Mexico), Germany, Japan, Australia, China, France, Korea, India, Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark), Italy and Belgium/Netherlands.
- DC's hospitality industry generated an estimated $5.57 billion in visitor spending on hotels, dining, shopping, transportation and entertainment in 2006, a 7% increase over 2005.
- Although international visitors represented only 8% of total visitation in 2006, they accounted for 22% of all spending.
- Travel & tourism supports more than 71,000 full-time jobs in DC, generating $2.7 billion in wages.
