Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Founded by choreographer Alvin Ailey in 1958, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater brings the richness of Black culture and the breadth of modern dance to the stage. Its repertory spans generations of choreographers, with Ailey’s Revelations at its heart: a landmark work, first performed in 1960, that draws on spirituals, gospel and blues to express a journey from struggle toward joy. The company’s legacy also includes Ailey’s solo Cry, created for Judith Jamison, and a tradition of honoring African American experience through bold, emotionally resonant movement. The result is dance that pairs athletic precision with vivid storytelling.
