From 1861 to 1865, Americans fought each other with a ferocity unseen in the country’s history.

The immediate cause of the war was the secession of the Southern states. However, the roots lay in growing tensions over slavery. By the time the last shots were fired, as many as 750,000 Americans had been killed, and four million enslaved people were freed. This traveling banner exhibition, from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, examines the impact of the Civil War on Americans throughout the fractured nation.
The exhibit will be on display at the Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center (10209 Main St.) from November 11 - December 4.
