ABOUT BARBOURSVILLE: Founded in 1976 by Italian winemaker Gianni Zonin, Barboursville Vineyards helped usher Virginia into its modern era of winemaking, successfully establishing European Vitis vinifera varieties in the Commonwealth. The estate sits just outside of Charlottesville on the historic Barbour property, home to the ruins of the mansion designed by Thomas Jefferson for VA Governor James Barbour. Today, Barboursville is one of Virginia’s most distinguished wine estates, with a distinctly European influence and a deep connection to Monticello AVA. Its wines include both classic Bordeaux varieties and Italian grapes such as Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, and Barbera. The estate’s signature Octagon, a Bordeaux-style blend, is among its most celebrated wines and was the first Virginia wine to make Decanter’s U.S. Top 50 List. 2026 marks Barboursville’s 50th anniversary, five decades of Virginia winemaking.

ABOUT WINEMAKER LUCA PASCHINA: Luca Paschina has been the Director and winemaker since 1990 and is a third-generation winemaker from Piedmont, IT and one of Virginia’s most honored winemakers. Having made his first Nebbiolo at the age of 14, Paschina brings deep-rooted Italian winemaking tradition to Virginia, where he has championed the state’s Italian varietals and distinctive terroir. His signature red blend, Octagon, has earned international recognition, including being named one of the world’s Top 20 Merlots and a Top 50 U.S. Wine by Decanter Magazine. His accolades also include recognition among North America’s Most Admired Winemakers, acknowledgement by the James Beard Foundation among the country’s leading food and wine professionals, and the distinction of being named a Commendatore by the Italian Republic.
