Puccini’s Madama Butterfly follows Cio-Cio-San, a young woman in Nagasaki who builds her future around a promise from American naval officer Pinkerton—a promise that brings devastating consequences. Washington National Opera’s production draws audiences into the bustling port city with an immersive stage design by Walt Spangler, direction by E. Loren Meeker and choreography by Japanese movement specialist Kanji Segawa. Korean soprano Karah Son makes her company debut as Butterfly, with Matthew White as Pinkerton and Michelle Mariposa as Suzuki. Puccini’s soaring love duet and “Un bel dì” give voice to the opera’s tenderness and heartbreak.
