Experience the Beat: DC’s New Go-Go Museum & Cafe

The museum bringing the city’s signature sound to life.

Washington, DC has long been a melting pot of musical innovation, from the jazz-filled nights of U Street’s Black Broadway in the 1910s to the hardcore punk explosion of the 1980s. But no genre is more deeply embedded in the soul of the city than go-go.

Founded in the 1970s and kept alive through generations, go-go remains the heartbeat of DC. Now, with the opening of the Go-Go Museum & Cafe on Feb. 19, visitors can experience the unique genre firsthand. With free admission, live performances, interactive exhibits and historic artifacts, the museum is a must-visit for music lovers and history buffs alike.

01

Immerse yourself in go-go’s legendary history

The entrance to the Go-Go Museum & Café features bold signage on a black-painted brick building under a bright blue sky.

The museum’s historical timeline wall gives visitors a hands-on way to explore the roots of go-go. With a simple touch, you can uncover key moments in the genre’s evolution, from Chuck Brown’s pioneering beats to go-go’s influence on modern hip-hop and pop music. The exhibits bring DC’s vibrant music legacy to life.

One of the museum’s standout features is its AI-powered figures of Chuck Brown, the “Godfather of Go-Go,” and Sugar Bear. Visitors can ask these virtual legends questions and hear firsthand how go-go shaped their careers. This high-tech experience makes it feel like you’re having a conversation with two of DC’s most influential musicians.

03

Capture the moment with interactive photo ops

Go-go music is all about community and expression, and the museum lets visitors take home a piece of that culture. Step into photo stations featuring backdrops of historic go-go locations, then print your image directly onto a T-shirt for a one-of-a-kind souvenir. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a newcomer to the scene, this experience makes for the perfect keepsake.

04

Feel the music with live performances

Unlike most museums, the Go-Go Museum & Cafe lets you experience go-go music every time you visit. Downstairs, a cozy Tiny Desk-style stage hosts live performances by local bands to keep the spirit of go-go alive. On the patio, a larger stage is in the works for weekly outdoor concerts, turning the museum into a gathering place for DC’s thriving music community.

05

Create your own go-go sound

While you often hear about go-go’s male pioneers, the museum makes a point to celebrate the women who helped define the genre. An in-depth exhibit is dedicated to the contributions of female musicians, DJs and vocalists who have kept the go-go tradition alive, ensuring their impact is recognized and honored.

Taste the flavors of go-go culture

Go-go has always been about artistic expression, so the museum’s virtual graffiti wall lets visitors leave their own creative imprint. Use digital spray paint to craft your design (you can also print it on a T-shirt to take home) and contribute to the vibrant legacy of go-go.
