Author Talk: A Nation Unraveled with Sarah Jones Weicksel

Join the DAR Museum and the American Historical Association for an evening with historian Sarah Jones Weicksel

Sep 18, 2026. From: 5pm - 7pm

Join the DAR Museum and the American Historical Association for an evening with historian Sarah Jones Weicksel, author of A Nation Unraveled: Clothing, Culture, and Violence in the American Civil War Era (UNC Press). Drawing on the clothes Americans made, wore, mended, and even stole during the Civil War, Weicksel's book uncovers how something as everyday as clothing carried the weight of allegiance, loss, and survival during one of the most turbulent periods in American history.

Sarah Jones Weicksel is executive director of the American Historical Association and a historian and material culture scholar of the nineteenth century United States. She has held positions at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History and the Wolf Humanities Center at the University of Pennsylvania, and holds a PhD in history from the University of Chicago, an MA in American material culture from the Winterthur Program, and a BA in history from Yale University.

The evening will feature an engaging presentation by Weicksel, followed by a Q&A and book signing. Refreshments will be available before and after the talk. Limited books will be available for purchase at the event.
