The Big Cake Exchange: Cake is Art

Sun, May 31, 2026
4 to 7 pm

The Big Cake Exchange returns to NMWA for a celebration of cake as art and a catalyst for connection. Building on the joy of previous gatherings, this event invites participants to share cakes, stories, and conversation in a relaxed, creative atmosphere.

The only rule? Guests are required to bring a whole cake to share and enjoy. In the spirit of the event, we encourage you to bring a homemade cake, but store-bought cakes, ideally from a small business, are also welcome. As cakes are sliced and shared, the event becomes a collective experience shaped by the creativity and care of everyone involved. Whether elaborately decorated or delightfully simple, each cake contributes to a shared table and moment.

Designed for art lovers, bakers, and community-minded participants alike, this program emphasizes participation over perfection and connection over competition. Come for the cake, stay for the conversations, and leave with a deeper sense of community, a huge box of cake, and maybe a new favorite dessert or baker friend.

VIP ticketholders can attend and taste cakes, without bringing a cake of their own, limited quantity.

We recommend this event for ages 7 and up; one ticket admits one person.

By purchasing a ticket, you agree to the following disclaimer: The cakes at this event are made in home kitchens and brought in by individual attendees, not prepared in a licensed commercial kitchen. Consumption of these cakes is at your own risk. While we encourage participants to label their cakes with ingredients and potential allergens, the event organizers, hosts, volunteers, and sponsors are not responsible or liable for any illness, allergic reactions, or other issues arising from consuming these homemade cakes. Please exercise caution and personal responsibility regarding your dietary choices.

Presented in partnership with The Big Cake Exchange, organized by Jill Nguyen and Tiffany MacIsaac.

FAQ

1. What does my ticket include?
Your ticket includes museum entrance and a box to fill with cake slices.

2. Do I need to bake the cake myself?
Nope! Make or purchase a whole, uncut cake and bring it to the party. It must be at least 6 in. in diameter, but 7 to 8 in. or larger is ideal.

3. Can I bring my friend just to hang out?
Unfortunately, everyone that attends must have a ticket and must bring their own cake. No sharing or splitting one cake between multiple people to gain entry.

4. Can I use nuts?
If you can cake it, you can bring it. Please keep in mind that some attendees have allergies, so cakes containing nuts will be placed on a separate table to avoid cross-contamination. We ask that you clearly label your cake with life-threatening allergens. All attendees should proceed with caution when consuming the cakes.

5. Can I bring cupcakes or bars?
No. The cake must be a whole, uncut cake.

6. How many cakes can I bring?
The more the merrier! Each attendee is required to bring at least one cake but make as many as your heart desires.
