Day of Art and Community



Visit the museum for an opportunity to meet artist Alison Saar, art-making, and special tours.

Join us for a day exploring intersections between art and community. Inspired by principles of inclusion and collaboration, admission all day is half price.


Alison Saar on Octavia Butler: In the intimate setting of the Library and Research Center (4th floor), artist Alison Saar discusses the visionary example and ongoing relevance of writer Octavia Butler from 11 am to 12 pm. The casual, drop-in conversation invites visitors to see Saar’s recent interpretation of Butler’s groundbreaking novel Kindred (1979) up close. Bonus! Tour: Celebrating Pride: Explore the creative contributions of LGBTQIA+ artists in NMWA’s collection. On this interactive tour at 12 pm, look closely at several works that span time and space and consider themes of identity and community. Free with admission but advanced registration required. Collection Highlights Tour: Explore the museum’s collection during an engaging 45-minute drop-in tour at 2 pm. This guided experience features six to eight works on view, highlighting the creative contributions of artists from the 16th century to today. Artist Alison Saar will join museum educators as a special guest in the galleries to speak directly to some of her works on view. Meet at the Information Desk (ground floor).


Drop-in Art-Making: Join NMWA educators in the museum’s studio (4th floor) from 10 am to 4 pm for free, self-directed art-making activities inspired by Alison Saar’s printmaking practice and other artworks on view. Visitors of all ages are invited to participate. Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.


Tickets and Reservations: Free with admission. Admission is half price all day. Registration required for some events.
