For the first time in the DAR Museum's history, the signatures of all 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence are on view together as part of the exhibition Preserving Patriotism: The Declaration of Independence and Its Legacy at DAR. Museum Director and Chief Curator Jennifer Johnson will speak about this landmark display.
Spanning six decades of American history, these autographs appear in letters, legal and military documents, receipts, and even currency, which offer an intimate glimpse into the daily lives of the men who shaped a nation. Brought together for the first time to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration, they stand as a testament to the NSDAR's enduring commitment to preserving America's founding legacy.
August Speaker
DAR Museum Director and Chief Curator Jennifer N. Johnson joined the museum in July 2025. A seasoned museum leader Jen has a track record of providing access to collections, delivering engaging exhibitions, and evaluating and improving visitor experience. Before starting at the DAR, she was director of exhibitions at the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum and led the effort to reimagine 25,000 square feet of public space, with a focus on human-centered exhibition design, audience growth, and enhanced accessibility. Previously, Jen worked for the National Archives Museum, where she led curatorial and exhibition design teams for two multimillion-dollar renovations in 2009 and 2021 and curated a number of special exhibitions, including “School House to White House: The Education of the Presidents,” “Making Their Mark: Stories through Signatures,” and “Amending America.” She also helped develop NAM’s national traveling exhibitions program and created exhibits for the anniversaries of the Bill of Rights and the 19th Amendment, each of which was seen by millions of people in all fifty states. Since starting at the DAR Museum last summer, Jen has overseen two special exhibitions successfully installed for America 250!: Revolution in Their Words and was the curator of Preserving Patriotism.
