Sustainability at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center

As one of the largest buildings in the nation's capital, the Walter E. Washington Convention Center (WEWCC) has sustainability embedded in its building from design to maintenance and operations.

DC's convention center was awarded the LEED Platinum certification in 2025, proving its commitment to practical and measurable sustainable strategies. From adaptable LED lighting systems to turning wood pallets into mulch on site, the WEWCC does their part in promoting responsibility in the meetings industry.

The convention center is committed to hosting exceptional meetings and events while minimizing environmental impact. Sustainability is woven into its operations and infrastructure, with innovative systems in place to reduce its carbon footprint.

  • Advanced Lutron lighting system uses LEDs and adjusts automatically based on event schedules and room occupancy.
  • Bird-safe glass helps regulate indoor temperatures and covers approximately 50% of the building, reducing energy use and protecting wildlife.
  • Customizable HVAC system optimizes energy performance and comfort
  • Synexis Blade system continuously purifies the air, supporting a healthier environment for guests and staff.

Energy & Resource Efficiency

Day-to-day energy optimization plays a crucial role in reducing a meeting’s environmental footprint, and the WEWCC prioritizes efficiency with smart systems and design.

  • Occupancy sensor lighting in drive ramps, loading docks and service corridors reduces energy use.
  • Motion-activated bathroom and plumbing fixtures minimize water use.
  • Filtered water stations ensure clean and safe hydration while cutting down on single-use plastic.
  • Automated lighting controls lower light levels when exhibit halls and public areas are unoccupied.
  • High-efficiency elevators and escalators, controlled by an advanced EMIS system, further reduces power on demand.
  • Custom high-speed doors and weather stripping improve insulation and maintain temperature efficiency in the exhibit halls.

The Environmental Protection Agency determined that one person produces almost five pounds of trash each day. For a facility hosting up to 42,000 attendees, effective waste reduction and recycling programs are essential. The center’s efforts include:

  • 100% recycled paper products for restrooms and retail food outlets
  • Waste separation by recycle bottles, cans, paper and general waste
  • Cardboard bailing
  • Food waste composting
  • Mulching pallets on site
  • Partnerships with local nonprofits like Community Forklift for materials donations
