Destination DC's (DDC) marketing and communications strategy supports the District’s economic recovery by reaching potential visitors and inspiring them to travel to the nation’s capital. The current cross-channel promotional efforts are focused on fall travel across editorial and content development.

Media Coverage

 

Domestic

DDC’s marketing activations were featured on news coverage of Pride celebrations in New York on ABC 7 (WABC) and in Los Angeles on ABC 7 (KABC) and KTLA 5. Hosted trips resulted in coverage of the reopening of the Folger Shakespeare Library in The Boston Globe and Forbes, which mentioned three other members in its proposed “bookworms’ trip to DC.” The Washington Post lists 10 members in its roundup of weekend events and NBC 4 mentions 11 members in its Fourth of July preview. Elliott is quoted on WAMU about the pandas and in the Washington Business Journal about the upcoming NATO Summit.

 

International

International media featured DC as a top sustainable destination in India’s TLF Magazine. Australia’s largest airline, Qantas, included DC as one of 15 coolest places to visit in the USA in its in-flight magazine, and 56 members were included in the German Iwanowski travel guide for the US East Coast. Canada’s Toronto Star highlights DC as the host city for World Pride 2025. Vive USA (Mexico) details activities planned for July 4 and the new direct flight from Mexico City to Washington, DC. Band News Radio (Brazil) showcases DC as a city that merges politics, culture, and diversity. Conde Nast Traveler (China) covers Destination DC's participation in the 14th U.S.-China Tourism Summit. 

 

Trade

Trade coverage supported DDC's Travel Rally in Northstar and Exhibitor. The announcement of DDC's new board chairperson, Meade Atkeson, is covered in Hotels Magazine and BizBash. DDC is listed among Best DMOs of 2024 in Smart Meetings, while the AEF and its inaugural event awarding scholarships is highlighted in Conference and Meetings World. Sponsored content in trade outlets highlighted DC's sustainability and listed things to do in the city for business travelers.

WorldPride 2025 Support
DDC has ramped up its support. Promotion for the landmark event includes but is not limited to:

  • On-site activations at other Pride celebrations all over the world, including Los Angeles, London, New York City, Toronto, Madrid, Sao Paulo and Mexico City, as well as domestic and international out-of-home and digital advertising
  • Media exposure at Pride celebrations, local press events and journalist hosting.
  • Hosted 27 creators and members of the media who captured the essence of DC’s Pride. Creators included Pride is Totally Radical with Ravi, Capital Pride Parade with Kirstie and Christine, Road to WorldPride with Fercha and more. Reporters from Brazil, Canada, the U.S. and Germany attended.
  • Social media collaborations with RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars and the Capital Pride Alliance
  • A dedicated landing page, a listicle guide and options for hotel booking live on washington.org

Leisure Social

In June, DDC's leisure channels were alive with vibrant celebrations and engaging content. We proudly honored all things Pride month and spotlighted LGBTQ+-owned businesses. We recognized June holidays such as Father's Day and Juneteenth. Capital Pride weekend was a standout as we hosted 27 creators and members of the media who captured the essence of the event. Creators included Pride is Totally Radical with Ravi, Capital Pride Parade with Kirstie and Christine, Road to WorldPride with Fercha and more. We curated a lively DC summer bucket list and crafted the perfect day in the city, resonating with locals and travelers alike. Popular posts featured iconic images such as the glowing Lincoln Memorial and DC from the friendly skies

 

Industry Social

Industry channels welcomed the AIA Conference to Washington, DC and celebrated Pride Month with a Big Bus in the Capital Pride Parade. Staff highlights included celebrating our Employee of the Quarter and June milestone anniversaries, plus a recap of Travel Rally and the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race events. Member Spotlights featured the Anacostia Arts Center, Sea DC Boats, Anacostia BID, Palette 22 and Boating in DC.
