Evenings celebrating the craft of writing and the art of living

In the Writers’ Studio: the Critic. Eric Weiner hosts an evening featuring Holly Smith, Michael Dirda, Ron Charles, and Sean Murphy.

May 14, 2026. From: 06:30 PM to 08:30 PM

This program, cosponsored by the Arts Club of Washington, is the second in a series of four that celebrates the ten-year anniversary of the Cheuse Center. The Cheuse Center has created an opportunity for audiences to celebrate and contemplate their own purpose and joy, through special pairings with esteemed writers, celebrating book critic and teacher Alan Cheuse.

NY Times bestselling author Eric Weiner hosts this program, in discussion with Holly Smith (editor-in-chief of the Washington Independent Review of Books, as well as a college lecturer, longtime freelance writer, and proud “Jeopardy!” bronze medalist), Michael Dirda (Pulitzer Prize-winning literary journalist and the author of five collections of essays and other works), Ron Charles (former book critic at The Christian Science Monitor and The Washington Post, now found on Substack), and Sean Murphy (founder of the non-profit 1455 Literary Arts and director of the Center for Story at Shenandoah University).

Please join for a refreshments and drinks reception, followed by a discussion that welcomes audience participation.
