Profs & Pints DC: Understanding Immigration

Profs and Pints DC presents: “Understanding Immigration,” a deep and nuanced examination of today’s immigration realities, trends, and challenges, with Ernesto Castañeda

Jul 29, 2025. 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Profs and Pints DC presents: “Understanding Immigration,” a deep and nuanced examination of today’s immigration realities, trends, and challenges, with Ernesto Castañeda, professor of sociology and director of the Immigration Lab and the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies at American University.

For all the attention it receives in politics and policy debates, immigration to the United States remains poorly understood, with myths perpetuated by both the left and the right.

Gain an informed, data-driven perspective on it with Ernesto Castañeda, an acclaimed researcher of immigration patterns and immigrant communities and the author of books such as Immigration Realities: Challenging Common Misperceptions and Reunited: Family Separation and Central American Youth Migration.

In a talk tailored to be nonpartisan and accessible to all, Dr. Castañeda will discuss immigration and the challenges it poses both at our borders and in our nation’s interior. He’ll look at why people migrate, the scale of the influx of people, and the specific circumstances of undocumented immigrants, unaccompanied minors, asylum seekers, and refugees, including those living in Washington, D.C. He’ll give you a working knowledge of H-1B visas and concepts such as “family separation” and “humanitarian parole.” He’ll look at the relationship between immigration and crime and matters of safety in the U.S. border region.

Among the big-picture questions he’ll tackle: What do immigrants contribute to our economy and society? Is immigration a net positive, or a net negative, for a country? How would mass deportations affect the U.S.’ gross domestic product? (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)
