Brandon Wims has been promoted to Director at the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism at Jackson-Reed High School. Mr. Wims has worked at Jackson-Reed for the past 12 years, including as the College and Career Coordinator for the Academy for the past 4 years.
Washington, DC welcomes its newest NAF Academy of Hospitality and Tourism at River Terrace Education Campus. The team at River Terrace will be led by Director Cynthia Privott-Henson and educator Autumn Kelley. AEF looks forward to supporting the Academy by providing a yearly college scholarship for a student, assisting with field trips and year-round programming and building connections to the hospitality industry.

After 25 years at Jackson-Reed [formerly Wilson] High School, Alex Wilson, Director of the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism, is retiring at the end of this school year. Alex is always present with an infectious smile and is one of the most outspoken champions for young people in DC. He continually finds new learning opportunities for his Academy students. Starting with one academy in 1997 with 120 students, there are now seven career academies with over 1,100 students at Jackson-Reed. These students reflect the diversity of the largest and most diverse high school in the DMV.

This summer, organizations across the city welcomed interns through the Career Ready Internship Program. The American Experience Foundation helped place over 50 high school students with host employers. AEF proudly hosted 11 students for six weeks this summer:

  • Camiyah Price, Ballou High School
  • Charity Jones, Jackson-Reed High School
  • Destanie Coleman, Coolidge High School
  • Dominga Trice, Jackson-Reed High School
  • Erick Torres Flores, Coolidge High School

  • Jahmiaya Mosley, Jackson-Reed High School
  • Kori Johnson, Coolidge High School
  • Marcella Carroll, Ballou High School

Interns explored how sustainability and diversity, equity and inclusion values come to life in the travel and tourism industry. They met with hoteliers, leaders in the arts, restaurants, government, community and more.
