Gallerist Adrian Ferguson’s Petworth is a Main Street Meets Metro Melting Pot

Follow along to get the lowdown on Adrian Ferguson's recommendations in Petworth.

“My DC is vibrant – everything from the creativity, to the food, to the people – breathes life into me,” says locally-born-and-bred gallerist Adrian Ferguson. These days, the artist lives in Alexandria, but Petworth is his second home – especially Upshur Street, where you'll find his boutique gallery, Art of Noize.

Since its debut in 2017, Art of Noize has become a neighborhood institution and a village green of sorts. The space serves as a full-time art space for works from both local and global artists and also hosts a rotating schedule of open mics, screenings, rehearsals and parties. Ferguson's vision was clear from the beginning: to give independent artists a place to showcase their work and to bring folks together. "Having a space where people can experience art and culture every day is something that motivates me every day," he says. And for his labor of love, there's no place like Petworth.

Petworth's history stretches back to the early 19th century when Colonel John Tayloe III bought 200 acres near Rock Creek Road. Today, with its blend of historic homes, vibrant arts and community-oriented events like Art All Night and Petworth Festival, the area is half metropolitan melting pot and half small town. Mom-and-pop shops sell everything from books and puzzles to healing crystals and antiques, while restaurants range from homemade ramen to soul food, all within a few blocks. It’s an “if you know, you know” place the locals love and visitors will find themselves imagining their lives there.

Morning

Exterior of Cookie Wear featuring a colorful mural with playful graphics on a neighborhood storefront in Washington, DC.

You're on vacation, so you might as well sleep in! When you're ready to greet the day and caffeinate, head to Lulabelle's for coffee and pastries. A Petworth staple since 2017, the shop offers coffee, homemade ice cream, sweets, sandwiches, salads and various gift items. For a wider assortment of gifts to bring home, hit up their sister establishment, Willow. Continue your retail therapy at Cookie Wear, where proprietor Michelle "Noodles" Smith sells an array of kitschy goods – from apparel to accessories and souvenirs – that showcase your personality.

Afternoon

Exterior of Loyalty Bookstore, an independent neighborhood bookshop with a colorful storefront in Washington, DC.

No visit to Petworth is complete without a stop at Loyalty Bookstore, a Black, queer and Asian-owned independent bookstore with two locations that specialize in intersectional programming. Events include Books and Booze, a Meet Cute Book Club and author talks. When hunger strikes, grab lunch at Honeymoon Chicken, the brainchild of restaurateurs Rob Sonderman (of The Federalist Pig) and his business partner, Steve Salis. One of Adrian's must-orders is the hot honey cauliflower, a nice wake-up call for your tastebuds before you sink your teeth into their crispy-on-the-outside, juicy-on-the-inside chicken legs. Afterward, explore Petworth's abundant public art.

Evening

After a day of retail therapy and delicious food, unwind with art and culture at the aforementioned Art of Noize. Make sure to check the events calendar for art shows, artist talks, book releases, film screenings, and open mic nights. Invite your friends to dinner at the flagship location of Timber Pizza, which boasts an eclectic menu of salads as well as classic and creative pies (Timber now has four locations across the DMV). Close out the night with cigars and bourbon at DC native Dyane Johnson's Petworth Cigars. The beautifully appointed building has been in the Johnson family for more than 45 years and remains 100% Black woman-owned. Learn to roll your own cigar or simply select from a diverse collection at the shop, which provides an ideal setting to breathe deep, chat and reflect on your perfect day.
