Matthew Green Runs DC

Matthew Green knows every corner of the nation’s capital.

He didn’t just grow up here; the dedicated runner has explored the city stride by stride. The Founder and Captain of the District Running Collective (DRC) has experienced his hometown from countless angles. However, even as he pounds the pavement day after day on his daily runs, he’s still discovering new things in DC.

Green’s passion for running has built a community: what started in 2013 as a birthday 5K expected to attract 20 people brought in 100 instead. And just like that, the DRC was born. Today, Green leads hundreds of runners three times weekly under the motto "WE. RUN. THE. DISTRICT.” and also supervises the annual District 19 race series, which offers a range of distances and attracts participants from all over the world.

When he's not beating his feet on the sidewalks of the city, Green enjoys life in Petworth, a neighborhood that perfectly balances historical landmarks like President Lincoln's Cottage with contemporary bookstores. You may also spot him connecting with the community at DRC HQ in Bryant Market or even spinning as DJ FriendOnMars at Shanklin Hall social club.

Morning

Two cyclists ride along a tree-lined path in Rock Creek Park on a sunny day.

Start your day off with a run (or stroll) through Rock Creek Park, one of the city’s most charming urban escapes. The massive metropolitan green space is one of the largest in the U.S., with more than 1,754 acres of trails, tennis courts, playgrounds and nature centers. Whether hiking, biking or meditating, this park offers a serene break from the buzz of a busy city.

Afternoon

Head over to La Cosecha to fuel up with some Latin food. Some of Matt’s favorite spots include the La Casita Pupuseria (a Salvadorian stall that serves savory pancakes stuffed with deliciousness) and Peruvian Brothers (which serves traditional Comida Criolla staples like meaty sandwiches and empanadas).

Next, check out Bryant Street Market for some afternoon entertainment. Leisure meets community in the vibrant retail hub, which is home to a bevy of unique spaces. Watch a film at Alamo Drafthouse, hit the skating rink at Kraken, or explore the installations at Metrobar (a creative space in a refurbished Metrocar).

Evening

A view of the buildings on Adams Morgan's main street in DC.

At dinner time, explore the wonderful culinary options in Adams Morgan. For ribs, barbecue and sandwiches with a sophisticated twist and outstanding flavors, try The Federalist Pig. If you’re in the mood for Middle Eastern food, there’s Lapis, a modern Afghan restaurant that serves up soul-warming food in a lavish space that transports you across the globe.

After dinner, hit Shanklin Hall, a DC social club that hosts events, art exhibitions, vinyl nights and a culinary incubator for up-and-coming chefs. The intimate venue promises a cozy atmosphere, perfect for winding down and reflecting on a full day in the city.
