AU Offers Free Learning Day for Furloughed Federal Workers
In response to the ongoing government shutdown, AU’s School of Public Affairs hosted a free “Classes Without Quizzes” event for furloughed federal employees, offering a day of professional learning and networking. More than 500 participants attended sessions on leadership, cybersecurity, resilience and career development.
DC Man Provides $4K in Meals for Federal Workers During Shutdown
During the third day of the government shutdown, Chance Albury, founder of Do Something Different DC, covered $4,000 of meals for federal workers and contractors struggling financially. Partnering with local restaurants and members, such as RASA and more, Albury aimed to bring the community together and support those affected.
Tudor Place Earns National Recognitions as It Launches into the Fall Season
Tudor Place earned two major national honors this year: a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator and a Gold Seal of Transparency from Candid, recognizing the landmark’s excellence in financial health, accountability and openness.
Organized by Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington, DC Cocktail Week (Dec. 1-7) invites local bars and restaurants to showcase their creativity and attract new patrons through a week-long celebration of the city’s vibrant cocktail culture.
200 Books Donated to DC Non-profit
AU’s Zero Waste Office recently donated over 200 books to DC Books to Prisons, a nonprofit that distributes educational materials to incarcerated individuals in 600 prisons across 34 states. The donation, sourced from retired AU professors, the Kay Spiritual Life Center and Bender Library, reflects the university’s commitment to both sustainability and social justice.
Rorschach Pops Up in Akridge's SW Development with Spooky Season Special
Rorschach Theatre has brought its latest immersive production, So Late Into the Night, to a 5,000-square-foot retail space in Colette, part of The Stacks development in southwest DC. This marks Rorschach’s first southwest DC project since 2001 and its debut collaboration with developer Akridge.
Food Justice East of the Anacostia River
The Fresh Food Factory brings healthy, local, culturally relevant food to DC’s Wards 7 and 8, and owner Amanda Stephenson highlights its community impact in an award-winning video created by local high school students Morgan and Sukey.

Co-owner Debby Portillo González was recently selected for the prestigious 2025 James Beard Foundation Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Program, continuing her family’s multi-generational legacy of women-led restaurants while bringing her Salvadoran heritage to the restaurant’s award-winning menu.
The Newest Additions to The MICHELIN Guide Washington, DC: October 2025
Eight restaurants in Washington, DC were newly added as “recommended” by the Michelin Guide this fall, ahead of the official star/Bib Gourmand announcements. DDC member Fish Shop was recognized among the prestigious new additions to the MICHELIN Guide.
The District Department of Transportation’s Strategic Bike Plan outlines a five-year strategy to expand and connect DC’s bikeway network through protected lanes, safer infrastructure and equitable access. It supports the city’s broader goals of sustainability, mobility and community.
