Asian Elephant Is Pregnant at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo is preparing for its first Asian elephant birth in nearly 25 years, as 12-year-old Nhi Linh is expected to deliver a calf between mid-January and early March 2025. Both parents’ genetics are underrepresented, making the pregnancy especially important and offering a boost to the endangered species’ diversity.
DDC's Sustainability District Members Included in New Sustainable DC Points of Interest Map
A new, easy-to-use map published by DC's Department of Energy and Environment compiles everything from community gardens to compost bins to bike trails. Users can find DDC's Sustainability District members under the Economy & Education tab.
Applications for District Sustainability Awards Now Open
Know a business, individual or organization working toward a more sustainable DC? Encourage them to apply! All it takes is a short form demonstrating how they are addressing the environmental, economic and social needs of the District. Applications must be submitted by Jan. 23. Winners will be recognized at DDC's Sustainability Summit in March, receive an award of locally-reclaimed wood, be featured in newsletters and case studies and more.
