Peirce Mill Tea House: Women’s History Month Celebration

Step back in time at this free public event in Rock Creek Park

Mar 21, 2026. 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

This free, family-friendly event celebrates the women entrepreneurs who operated the Peirce Mill Tea House in the early 20th century. Visitors will learn about the women who managed the tea house and explore how tea houses served as important social spaces connected to the broader struggle for women’s rights.

Guests are invited to travel back one hundred years to experience the charm of the tea house “Down by the Old Mill Stream.” Peirce Mill will be transformed with period décor and accompanied by popular recorded music from the era. Visitors are encouraged to wear period attire or festive, creative clothing.

The event will feature hands-on, educational activities for all ages, including a special tea house activity booklet designed for young visitors. At the nearby barn, guests can also view a short film about Hattie Sewell, who managed the Peirce Mill Tea House from 1920 to 1921.

In the mill yard, visitors can enjoy free mini cupcakes from DC Sweet Potato Cakes and other light refreshments. The afternoon will also include a special tea tasting led by Jessica Eason of Rough Seas Productions.

All ages are welcome, and admission is free. Creative dress is encouraged.

Rain date: Sunday, March 22.
