Modern Missions: U.S. Army Counterinsurgency Operations in Operation Iraqi Freedom

Join Army veteran Michael Formica and Army historian Nicholas Schlosser as they look at this challenging time for American operations.

Feb 06, 2025. 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

After the first several years of Operation Iraqi Freedom, U.S. Army efforts began to focus heavily on a newly revised counterinsurgency operations (COIN) doctrine in Iraq. Developed and implemented under the eye of Lt. Gen. David H. Petraeus, a rigorous effort to update the Army’s training in COIN led to a change in operations in theater. Join Army veteran Michael Formica and Army historian Nicholas Schlosser as they look at this challenging time for American operations. Michael D. Formica has been the Executive Deputy to the Commanding General, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command since April 2022. He holds a MS in National Security Affairs from the United States Army War College (2001). He retired from the Army in 2007 at the rank of colonel following 27 years of active duty. Nicholas J. Schlosser, Ph.D. is a U.S. Army Center of Military History historian. He received his doctorate in history from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2008. He is the author of “The Surge, 2007-2008,” published by the U.S. Army Center of Military History in 2017.
