Ranky Tanky

April 6, 2018
Starting: 07:30 PM

From the Gullah community of coastal South Carolina comes this vibrant and exceptionally talented quintet. “Ranky Tanky” loosely translates to “work it” or “get down” in the Gullah language, and this group knows how to do both! From playful game songs to ecstatic shouts, from heartbreaking spirituals to delicate lullabies, Gullah music is eclectic and propulsive. Ranky Tanky brings a contemporary twist to traditional Gullah music, with gospel vocals, jazz trumpet solos, and a R&B rhythm section. Up front is Quiana Parler, one of the Lowcountry’s most celebrated vocalists. She’s accompanied by South Carolina natives Quentin Baxter, Kevin Hamilton, Charlton Singleton, and Clay Ross.

  • The members of Ranky Tanky first came together in 1998 to form a jazz quartet in Charleston, South Carolina.
  • Historically, the Gullah region extended from Cape Fear, North Carolina to Jacksonville, Florida, but today the Gullah area is concentrated in the Georgia and South Carolina Lowcountry.
  • Parler, a top contestant on American Idol, was discovered by Clay Aiken and toured with him nationally for 7 years.
