First Chefs: Fame and Foodways from Britain to the Americas
Early culinary culture is illuminated in this in-depth exhibit from the Folger Shakespeare Library. First Chefsfocuses on five individuals who strongly influenced the development of the culinary arts, including Hercules, a slave of George Washington who escaped to spread his mastery of early American cooking. The exhibit expands beyond those five to additionally highlight other early modern men and women whose lives were influenced by the food culture of the day, for better or worse.
