History Hike Attack on Washington: A Walking Tour of Bladensburg Battlefield," with John Maass

This free walking tour takes place at Bladensburg Waterfront Park

Oct 03, 2024 - Oct 06, 2024. 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

During the War of 1812, British forces made the Chesapeake Bay region a target of attack in 1814. After landing troops on the Patuxent River, a powerful column of redcoats quickly moved to attack the U.S. capital at Washington. In response, an American force deployed to block the British threat. The two armies met at Bladensburg on Aug. 24 in a bloody battle and a British victory. Join U.S. Army historians John Maass and Glenn Williams for a walking tour of the battleground and learn about the devastating defeat for American arms. This free walking tour takes place at Bladensburg Waterfront Park. Participants provide their own transportation and meet at the park. Please visit the park’s website for driving directions and accessibility information: https://www.pgparks.com/parks_trails/bladensburg-waterfront-park.

The program will be offered on both October 3 and 6 starting at 10 a.m. each day. The park is located at 4601 Annapolis Road, Bladensburg, MD 20710. The park is free to enter.

Ability Level: Easy. This walk is approximately 1.5 miles over generally even terrain.
